a change of plans

Up until a couple of weeks ago the family Pickersgill were going to embark on a 'reverse sea change' and move the clan to the big wide streets of Ballarat. An affordable housing market and quality of life were the main reasons but  things can change pretty quickly in this house and a number of factors conspired to undermine those plans. The work/family balance can be tenuous even at the best of times, but I guess I started having reservations when I realised just how much time Andrew would have to spend travelling into Melbourne and back everyday. With a new(ish) baby and a toddler with a search and destroy philosophy, when it came to crunch time, I just chickened out.

So...now what? We have been in a holding pattern for the last 6 months and I have a very long list of things that need to be repaired, painted, cleaned, moved, removed and re-decorated. If we are going to be staying put then I intend to feather this nest a little, even if it is someone else's.

stay tuned!

  2. Wow, that's a big decision. We recently made a similar one to stay put and 'feather' our little 50s house rather than look for a bigger one. We moved to the outer suburbs from the inner ones because we wanted to buy rather than keep renting. It's taken quite a bit of getting used to but I actually felt really great once we decided to stop treating this place as a 'transition' house and make it a home. Re-stumping here we come!

  4. You know what we had a building inspector here the other day and he said that re-stumping only takes about four days and you don't even have to move out! I've always heard such horror stories but I think that is if you combine it with have all your floorboards taken up and replaced (which we would like to do at some stage but not now). That being said Kevin McCloud is welcome here anytime!

  6. Don't say chicken out. You made a decision and the best piece of advice my father has ever given me was that any decision can be un-decided. When we moved the family from the country to the coast eight years ago and it looked like turning bad I said to my Dad we'd made a huge mistake. He said: "So what, you made a decision, if it turns out to be a bad one, make a new one". Amen to that.

  7. hey Caz, just discovered your blog - love it! especially 'loin fruit'
the 'will we, won't we' move to regional victoria conversation is a well worn path around here. I'm hoping with brumby's latest announcements there might come some incentives... plus a decent policy direction to improve job prospects in places that are not the Melb CBD.
It's bendigo for us... hopefully by the beginning of next year, but it's always easy to talk about it when it's in the future(!)
